C0042 is a chassis diagnostic code indicating a fault in the Brake Pedal Position Sensor (BPPS) circuit, also known as the brake light switch. This sensor monitors brake pedal travel and communicates pedal position to the ABS module, traction control system, and other controllers. When the circuit reads out of expected parameters—too high, too low, or intermittent—the code sets and the system may default to a safe mode.

5. Faulty ABS/ESC Module

6. ECM/PCM Fault (Rare)

The engine control module rarely fails solely for a brake pedal sensor code; this is usually a last resort diagnosis after all other causes are ruled out.
