C0061 — Lateral Acceleration Sensor

C0061 means the ABS or electronic stability control module has detected an abnormal, missing, or out-of-range signal from the lateral acceleration sensor. This sensor measures sideways G-force so the stability system can detect sliding or skidding. The code is set when the module no longer trusts the sensor’s reading.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed lateral acceleration sensor / sensor cluster

The accelerometer or combined yaw/lateral-acceleration module can drift, fail internally, or produce an out-of-range signal; this is the most common root cause for C0061.

2. Wiring or connector fault in the sensor circuit

Opens, shorts to ground or power, high resistance, or corrosion in the harness between the sensor and the ABS/ESC module can interrupt or distort the signal.

3. Incorrect mounting, misalignment, or physical damage

If the sensor is tilted, loose, or mounted on a damaged bracket, its zero-point and output will be wrong and may set a plausibility code.

4. Low or unstable system voltage

A weak battery, poor charging system, or bad ground can cause the sensor or module to report erratic values, especially during cranking or high electrical load.

5. ABS/ESC control module internal fault

Internal failure of the control module that processes the lateral-acceleration signal is uncommon, but possible; it should only be considered after the sensor and wiring are ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all DTCs and review freeze-frame data; note whether C0061 is current or intermittent and if related yaw, steering-angle, or wheel-speed codes are present.
  2. Visually inspect the sensor, bracket, and connector for damage, corrosion, looseness, or aftermarket hardware; confirm the sensor is mounted in the correct orientation.
  3. Check power, ground, and signal wiring between the sensor and the ABS/ESC module for continuity, shorts, and high resistance.
  4. View live data for lateral acceleration while the vehicle is stationary on level ground and during gentle turns; compare readings to expected values and manufacturer specifications.
  5. If the sensor and wiring are normal but the signal remains implausible, verify module software/calibration and consider a failed ABS/ESC module only after other causes are excluded.
