Code C0081 indicates that the anti‑lock braking system (ABS) has detected a fault and illuminated the ABS malfunction indicator lamp. The fault is stored in the ABS control module and may also be communicated to the vehicle’s primary diagnostic network.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty wheel speed sensor

A damaged or contaminated sensor (or its wiring) prevents the ABS module from receiving accurate wheel‑speed data.

2. Open or shorted sensor wiring harness

Broken wires, corroded connectors, or damaged insulation interrupt the signal between the sensor and the ABS module.

3. ABS pump/motor assembly failure

The hydraulic pump or its motor may be inoperative, causing the module to set the malfunction indicator.

4. ABS control module internal fault

Internal circuitry or software error within the ABS module can trigger the code.

5. Blown ABS fuse or relay

Loss of power to the ABS module or pump due to a blown fuse or faulty relay will set the indicator.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all stored ABS codes and freeze‑frame data with a scan tool.
  2. Visually inspect wheel speed sensor connectors and wiring for damage, corrosion, or loose terminals.
  3. Measure resistance and signal output of each wheel speed sensor per manufacturer specifications.
  4. Check ABS fuse and relay operation; replace if open.
  5. Test ABS pump/motor activation using the scan tool’s bidirectional control function.
  6. If all sensors, wiring, and power supply are verified good, evaluate the ABS control module for internal faults.
