C0508 — Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit Low

C0508 means the ABS or stability-control module has detected a lower-than-expected voltage or signal from the right front wheel speed sensor circuit, often because the circuit is shorted to ground or the sensor itself is failing. The module relies on this signal for anti-lock braking, traction control, and stability control. A 'Circuit Low' code points to the signal voltage dropping below the normal operating range.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty right front wheel speed sensor

The sensor itself is the most common source of a Circuit Low code. Internal wear, coil damage, or a shorted sensor can pull the circuit voltage below the expected threshold.

2. Wiring or connector fault shorted to ground

Chafed, pinched, or melted insulation in the sensor harness can short the signal or power wires to ground. Corroded, loose, or pushed-out connector pins can also cause a low-voltage reading.

3. Excessive sensor air gap or damaged tone ring

A loose sensor, worn wheel bearing, bent axle, or cracked tone ring can weaken the signal amplitude enough that the module interprets it as a low circuit. Physical damage or debris on the sensor tip has the same effect.

4. Contamination or corrosion at the sensor or connector

Brake dust, road salt, or moisture can degrade the sensor tip or connector terminals, reducing signal strength or creating an unintended path to ground.

5. Internal ABS / stability-control module fault

The control module that processes the sensor signal can rarely fail internally and misreport a low circuit. This should only be considered after the sensor, wiring, and tone ring have been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the right front sensor, connector, and harness for damage, corrosion, chafing, or disconnected terminals
  2. Measure the sensor's resistance and compare it to manufacturer specifications; check for an internal short to ground
  3. Test continuity and insulation of the sensor wiring between the sensor and the control module, looking for shorts to ground or opens
  4. Inspect the tone ring or reluctor ring for cracks, missing teeth, debris, and excessive runout; verify the sensor air gap and mounting integrity
  5. Monitor live data or use an oscilloscope to confirm a weak, erratic, or missing right front wheel speed signal while rotating the wheel
  6. Verify power, ground, and reference voltage at the control module before considering module replacement
