C0656 is a chassis code indicating that the signal from the left front wheel speed sensor 'B' does not match expected values or correlate properly with other wheel speed sensor inputs. Wheel speed sensors report individual wheel rotation to the ABS/traction control system, and a correlation fault typically means the signal is missing, erratic, or out of range. The vehicle often disables ABS, traction control, and/or electronic stability control as a protective response.

1. Faulty or contaminated left front wheel speed sensor B

A cracked, bent, corroded, or debris-covered tone ring produces an irregular signal that fails the correlation check, even when the sensor is functional.

3. Wiring, connector, or harness issues

Corroded terminals, chafed insulation, broken wires near suspension flex points, or a loose connector at the sensor or ABS module are frequent causes and should be ruled out before replacing any part.

4. Incorrect wheel/tire size or air pressure mismatch

A significantly different rolling circumference on the left front wheel (wrong tire size, very low pressure) can cause the system to flag a correlation error against the other wheels.

5. ABS or brake system hydraulic module faults

Less common, but internal module problems or weak power/ground supply to the module can produce wheel speed sensor correlation codes.

6. PCM/ECM or other control module issue

Genuine control module failures are rare for this code. The module is usually not at fault and should be considered only after all sensors, wiring, tone rings, and power supplies have been verified.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan all modules for related ABS/traction/stability codes and review freeze-frame data to see under what conditions the fault set.
  2. Visually inspect the left front wheel speed sensor, its wiring harness along the suspension, and the connector for damage, corrosion, looseness, or contamination.
  3. Inspect the tone ring (reluctor) on the wheel hub or axle for cracks, rust scale, debris, or missing teeth; clean or service as needed.
  4. Measure the sensor's resistance and/or AC voltage output while rotating the wheel by hand, comparing the reading to manufacturer specifications and to the other wheel speed sensors.
  5. Check power supply and ground to the ABS module and verify there is no excessive resistance or voltage drop in the sensor circuit.
  6. Road test the vehicle while monitoring live wheel speed sensor data to confirm whether the left front reading is erratic, drops out, or disagrees with the other wheels.
