A wiring fault in the ground path controlled by the engine computer can prevent the heater from activating.

5. Faulty Engine Computer (PCM/ECM)

The driver circuit inside the PCM that controls the heater ground has failed. This is extremely rare.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan the vehicle to verify the code and review freeze frame data to see under what conditions it was set.
  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connector for Bank 1 Sensor 3 for heat damage, chafing, or corrosion.
  3. Check the vehicle's fuse box for any blown fuses related to the oxygen sensor heater circuit.
  4. Unplug the sensor and use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the heater terminals; compare to manufacturer specifications.
  5. With the ignition on, check for proper battery voltage at the heater power supply pin at the sensor connector.
