P0054 indicates that the engine control module has detected an abnormal resistance in the heater circuit of the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) located downstream of the catalytic converter on bank 1, sensor 2. The heater brings the sensor to operating temperature quickly; when its resistance is out of spec, the PCM sets this code.
The internal heater coil of the downstream O2 sensor can open or develop high resistance, triggering the code.
Corrosion, chafing, or loose pins in the heater circuit wiring can increase resistance or cause an open circuit.
Many vehicles fuse the heater supply; a blown fuse or stuck relay will prevent proper voltage, appearing as high resistance.
An exhaust leak can cool the sensor, causing the heater to work harder and the PCM to interpret resistance as out of range.
Though uncommon, a failure in the PCM's internal driver for the heater circuit can produce false high‑resistance readings; this is considered only after other causes are ruled out.
Replacing the PCM is rarely necessary. The code is almost always caused by a faulty sensor heater, wiring issue, or blown fuse. Only consider PCM failure after those items have been verified good.
Contamination affects the sensor’s signal voltage, not its heater resistance. A dirty sensor usually sets a different code (e.g., P0130‑P0135).
The vehicle will run, but the heater circuit fault can lead to increased emissions and possible drivability issues; it’s advisable to repair it soon to avoid inspection failure.
Clearing only removes the indicator; if the underlying heater resistance fault remains, the code will return after the monitor runs.
