P0054 — Ho2S Heater Resistance Bank 1 Sensor 2

P0054 indicates that the engine control module has detected an abnormal resistance in the heater circuit of the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) located downstream of the catalytic converter on bank 1, sensor 2. The heater brings the sensor to operating temperature quickly; when its resistance is out of spec, the PCM sets this code.

Symptoms

1. Failed HO2S heater element (sensor itself)

The internal heater coil of the downstream O2 sensor can open or develop high resistance, triggering the code.

2. Damaged wiring or connector to the sensor heater

Corrosion, chafing, or loose pins in the heater circuit wiring can increase resistance or cause an open circuit.

3. Blown fuse or faulty relay for the O2 sensor heater circuit

Many vehicles fuse the heater supply; a blown fuse or stuck relay will prevent proper voltage, appearing as high resistance.

4. Exhaust leak upstream of the sensor affecting heater readings

An exhaust leak can cool the sensor, causing the heater to work harder and the PCM to interpret resistance as out of range.

5. PCM/ECM fault in heater driver circuit

Though uncommon, a failure in the PCM's internal driver for the heater circuit can produce false high‑resistance readings; this is considered only after other causes are ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan for codes and record freeze frame data; confirm P0054 is present and no related heater circuit codes.
  2. Locate bank 1 sensor 2 O2 sensor; visually inspect the sensor, connector, and wiring for damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
  3. Measure heater resistance at the sensor connector with a multimeter (typically 2‑7 Ω depending on model); compare to specifications.
  4. Check the fuse and/or relay supplying heater voltage; replace if blown or faulty.
  5. If resistance is out of spec or wiring is good, replace the O2 sensor; clear codes and test drive to verify repair.
  6. If the code returns after sensor replacement, inspect the PCM heater driver circuit or consider PCM testing as a last resort.
