The powertrain control module (PCM) has detected voltage above the calibrated threshold in the control circuit for the air-assisted injector solenoid valve. This valve regulates supplementary air injection into the intake ports to improve fuel atomization and reduce cold-start emissions. A 'high' reading typically indicates a short to voltage, an open circuit, or an internal fault within the solenoid itself.

1. Faulty air-assist control solenoid valve

The solenoid may have an internal short-to-power or coil resistance that has drifted out of specification, causing the circuit voltage to read higher than expected by the PCM.

2. Short to voltage in control wiring

The low-side control wire between the PCM and the solenoid has rubbed through or melted against a power feed, causing battery voltage to back-feed into the circuit.

3. Open circuit in control wiring

A broken wire, severed trace, or disconnected connector can cause the PCM to see reference voltage (full system voltage) on the feedback line, interpreting it as a 'high' signal.

4. Corroded or damaged electrical connectors

Green corrosion, bent pins, or moisture intrusion in the valve connector can create high-resistance paths or intermittent opens that trigger the high-voltage fault.

5. PCM driver circuit failure

Rarely, the output driver inside the PCM that grounds the solenoid circuit may fail in a way that causes a voltage feedback error, but this should only be considered after the solenoid and wiring are proven sound.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Perform a visual inspection of the wiring harness and connectors for chafing, melting, corrosion, or disconnected terminals.
  2. Disconnect the air-assist control valve and measure its coil resistance, comparing the result to factory specifications; replace if out of range.
  3. With the valve disconnected and key-on/engine-off, check for the presence of battery voltage on the control wire (low side); voltage present indicates a short to power.
  4. Verify continuity of the control circuit between the valve connector and the PCM, and check for intermittent opens by wiggling the harness.
  5. Command the solenoid on using a scan tool or apply ground manually (with proper precautions) to verify mechanical operation and audible clicking.
  6. Monitor live data for commanded versus actual circuit states; if the PCM never commands the circuit active yet reports high voltage, evaluate the PCM only after confirming wiring integrity.
