P0092 — Fuel Pressure Regulator Control Circuit High

P0092 sets when the powertrain control module detects voltage on the fuel pressure regulator control circuit that is higher than specified. This electronic regulator adjusts fuel pressure to the injectors, and a 'high' reading usually points to a short-to-power condition or a fault within the regulator circuit rather than an actual overpressure event.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Short to power in the regulator control wiring

The control wire may be chafed, pinched, or melted against a voltage source, feeding battery voltage back into a circuit the PCM expects to pull low. This is the most common electrical fault behind a 'circuit high' code.

2. Faulty fuel pressure regulator solenoid or actuator

An internal short or open coil inside the regulator can cause abnormal resistance and voltage readings. Testing the solenoid resistance and command response will usually reveal the failure.

3. Corroded, damaged, or loose connector at the regulator

Poor terminal contact, water intrusion, or backed-out pins can create high-resistance or voltage-drop issues that the PCM interprets as a high-circuit condition.

4. Open or compromised ground/reference circuit

If the regulator's ground or reference path is degraded, the control circuit voltage can drift high because the return path is incomplete or resistive.

5. PCM driver or internal circuit fault

The PCM output driver that controls the regulator could fail, but this is uncommon. It should be considered only after the wiring, connector, and regulator solenoid have been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Confirm P0092 and record freeze frame data with a scan tool to see under what conditions the code set.
  2. Visually inspect the regulator wiring harness and connector for chafing, pin damage, corrosion, or contact with exhaust or moving components.
  3. With the key on and engine off, measure voltage on the regulator control circuit and compare it to manufacturer specifications; check for a short to power or short to another voltage circuit.
  4. Test the fuel pressure regulator solenoid resistance and command it on/off with a scan tool or lab scope to verify it responds correctly.
  5. If all circuits and the actuator test normal, evaluate PCM output on the control circuit and consider module replacement only as a last resort.
