This is a circuit fault, meaning the sensor signal is missing, implausible, or outside the expected voltage/frequency range rather than simply a minor airflow reading error.

1. Faulty MAF sensor

Internal failure of the sensing element or sensor electronics is the most common cause. The sensor may stop producing a valid signal or send an out-of-range voltage.

5. Engine computer/PCM failure

Rare. The PCM may fail to read the signal correctly, but this should only be considered after all wiring, power/ground, and sensor checks are verified.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan for additional codes and record freeze-frame data.
  2. Visually inspect the MAF connector and wiring harness for corrosion, damage, or loose pins.
  3. Check for proper battery voltage and ground at the MAF connector with the key on.
  4. Back-probe or use a scan tool to observe the MAF signal while idling and revving.
  5. Perform a wiggle test on the harness to check for intermittent connections.
  6. If power, ground, and wiring are good and the signal is incorrect, the MAF sensor is the most likely fault.
