P0114 indicates that the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has detected an intermittent signal from the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor 1 circuit on bank 1. The sensor’s output is fluctuating or dropping out, preventing the PCM from accurately measuring intake air temperature for fuel‑air mixture control.
The sensor itself may have internal failure causing its resistance or voltage signal to intermittently open or short.
Wiring harness, connectors, or terminals leading to the IAT sensor can suffer from chafing, corrosion, or loose pins, producing an intermittent circuit.
If the connector is not fully seated or the retaining clip is broken, vibration can cause the signal to drop out intermittently.
Insulation damage allowing the signal wire to touch chassis ground or a power source can create erratic readings that the PCM interprets as an intermittent fault.
Although sometimes suspected, the PCM rarely causes P0114; it should be considered only after the sensor, wiring, and connectors have been verified as good.
Replacing the PCM is rarely necessary for P0114. The code is almost always caused by a faulty IAT sensor, wiring, or connector issues. Only after those components have been tested and found good should the PCM be considered as a possible cause.
A dirty air filter does not directly trigger P0114, as the code relates to the sensor’s electrical circuit. However, extreme airflow restrictions can affect sensor readings and may contribute to drivability symptoms alongside the code.
Driving is possible, but you may experience reduced fuel economy, rough idle, and hesitation. Prolonged operation with an intermittent IAT signal can lead to suboptimal engine performance and increased emissions, so timely repair is advised.
