This code indicates the engine computer has detected a problem in the heater circuit of the oxygen sensor located on bank 2, sensor 3 position. The heater helps the sensor reach operating temperature quickly; a fault here usually points to an electrical issue in that specific circuit rather than the sensor's sensing element itself.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed oxygen sensor heater element

The internal heating element inside the sensor has burned out or developed an open circuit. This is the most common cause for a dedicated heater-circuit code.

2. Wiring damage or corrosion

Chafed, melted, or corroded wiring in the sensor heater circuit can interrupt current flow. Rodent damage and road-debris exposure are common contributors.

3. Connector or terminal fault

A damaged, corroded, or loose connector at the sensor can cause high resistance or an open circuit in the heater feed. Pins can push back or corrode over time.

4. Blown heater fuse or relay

Some vehicles supply the O2 sensor heaters through a dedicated fuse or relay. A blown fuse can disable the heater circuit for one or more sensors.

5. Engine computer (PCM/ECM) driver failure

The internal driver that controls the heater ground or feed inside the PCM has failed. This is rare and should only be considered after all wiring, connectors, and the sensor are verified good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Confirm the code with a scan tool and check for any related O2 heater or fuse codes on the same bank.
  2. Inspect the bank 2 sensor 3 wiring and connector for damage, corrosion, or pushed pins.
  3. Check the appropriate fuse or relay that supplies the O2 sensor heater circuit if applicable.
  4. Back-probe the sensor heater connector and verify battery voltage on the feed side with the key on.
  5. Measure heater element resistance at the sensor; compare to specification and check for open or short.
  6. If voltage, ground, wiring, and the sensor all test good, only then evaluate the PCM driver circuit.
