P0282 indicates the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected a low voltage condition in the electrical circuit controlling the fuel injector on cylinder 8. This typically means the injector is not receiving the expected signal or its solenoid coil has dropped out of the PCM's expected resistance range, often triggering a misfire on that cylinder.

1. Failed cylinder 8 fuel injector

The injector's solenoid coil is the most common point of failure. Internal shorts or open windings in the coil cause the circuit voltage to drop below the PCM's threshold.

2. Damaged, corroded, or loose injector connector

Moisture intrusion, heat cycling, and vibration can corrode the injector pigtail connector or back out the terminals, creating high resistance or an intermittent open.

3. Wiring harness damage to the cylinder 8 injector circuit

Chafed, pinched, or heat-damaged wires between the injector and PCM can cause voltage drop, an open circuit, or a short to ground on the injector control wire.

4. Contaminated fuel or partially clogged injector

Severely clogged or stuck injectors can alter current draw and, in extreme cases, cause circuit faults. Fuel contamination can also degrade injector windings over time.

5. Faulty injector driver or wiring inside the PCM

A failed output driver transistor or internal circuit trace on the PCM injector control circuit is possible but uncommon; this is typically investigated only after the injector and external wiring have been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan for all stored DTCs and review freeze frame data to confirm the fault is on cylinder 8 and observe engine conditions when it set.
  2. Visually inspect the cylinder 8 injector connector for corrosion, bent or backed-out pins, oil contamination, and verify the connector is fully seated and locked.
  3. Measure the injector's coil resistance with a multimeter (key off) and compare to the manufacturer specification; an open or shorted reading confirms a failed injector.
  4. With the connector disconnected and the key on, check for proper power supply and ground at the injector harness side using a multimeter or test light.
  5. Use a noid light or oscilloscope to verify the PCM is delivering an injector pulse command, and perform a voltage drop test on both the control and ground wires.
  6. If the injector and harness are good, evaluate the PCM's injector driver as a last resort, typically by checking with a known-good injector or referencing service information before considering module replacement.

Not directly. P0282 specifically points to the injector circuit, not ignition. A misfire on cylinder 8 may accompany it, but the code itself is set by injector electrical monitoring, so ignition components are not the root cause.

Will clearing the code fix the problem?

Clearing the code only erases the fault memory. If the underlying electrical problem is still present, the code will return as soon as the PCM runs its next monitor cycle.
