P0303 — Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected

Generic OBD-II · all makesPowertrain (engine & transmission)

Code P0303 indicates that the engine control module has detected a misfire occurring specifically in cylinder number 3. This means the combustion process in that cylinder is not occurring completely or consistently.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Ignition System Failure

A worn spark plug, failed ignition coil, or damaged spark plug wire preventing a strong spark in cylinder 3.

2. Fuel Delivery Issue

A clogged, leaking, or electrically failed fuel injector preventing proper fuel delivery to the cylinder.

3. Mechanical Compression Loss

Worn piston rings, a burnt or leaking valve, or a blown head gasket resulting in low cylinder compression.

4. Intake Vacuum Leak

Air leaking into the intake manifold specifically near the cylinder 3 intake port, causing a lean misfire.

5. PCM/ECM Malfunction

A failure in the engine computer's driver circuit for the cylinder 3 injector or coil; this is very rare.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve the code and clear it to verify if the misfire returns immediately.
  2. Swap the ignition coil from cylinder 3 to another cylinder and check if the code migrates to the new cylinder.
  3. Remove and inspect the spark plug for carbon fouling, erosion, or incorrect gap.
  4. Test the fuel injector for the correct electrical pulse and spray pattern.
  5. Perform a cylinder compression test to evaluate the mechanical health of the cylinder.
  6. Inspect the intake manifold and vacuum hoses around cylinder 3 for leaks using a smoke machine or vacuum gauge.

Frequently asked

Can I continue driving with a P0303 code?

It is not recommended, as unburnt fuel from the misfiring cylinder can enter the exhaust and overheat or destroy the catalytic converter.

Does this code mean I definitely have a bad spark plug?

While spark plugs are the most common cause, the misfire could also be caused by a failed coil, injector, or internal engine wear.

Should I replace my engine computer (PCM) to fix this?

No. PCM failure is extremely unlikely for a single-cylinder misfire. Exhaust all ignition, fuel, and mechanical possibilities before considering the computer.
