P0321 indicates the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an implausible, erratic, or out-of-range signal from the engine speed sensor located within the distributor. This circuit tells the computer the crankshaft’s position and speed so it can time ignition and fuel injection; a fault here typically causes a no-start or stall condition.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty distributor pickup coil or speed sensor

The magnetic pickup or Hall-effect sensor inside the distributor that generates the engine speed signal has failed internally, often from heat cycling or age, producing no signal or an erratic waveform.

2. Wiring or connector faults

Open circuits, short-to-ground, or high resistance in the harness between the distributor and PCM—commonly caused by chafing, corrosion at pins, or moisture intrusion—disrupt the reference voltage or signal return.

3. Damaged reluctor wheel or debris

The toothed trigger wheel (reluctor) inside the distributor may be cracked, corroded, or coated in metallic debris, altering the magnetic field and producing an inconsistent signal.

4. Mechanical distributor issues

Excessive shaft bearing wear or wobble changes the air gap between the pickup coil and reluctor wheel, leading to weak or intermittent pulses that the PCM interprets as a range/performance error.

5. Incorrect sensor installation

If the distributor was recently removed or replaced, improper seating or an incorrect air gap can cause the signal to fall outside expected parameters.

6. PCM internal fault

Rarely, the PCM’s input circuitry fails to correctly interpret a good sensor signal; this should only be considered after the sensor, wiring, and mechanical integrity have been verified good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the distributor cap, rotor, and external wiring for corrosion, oil contamination, or physical damage; check connector pin tension.
  2. Test the engine speed sensor’s resistance and output voltage against manufacturer specifications using a multimeter or lab scope while cranking the engine.
  3. Back-probe the harness at the distributor to verify the PCM is supplying correct reference voltage (typically 5V or 8V) and a solid ground.
  4. Perform a wiggle test on the wiring harness while monitoring live data to expose intermittent opens or shorts caused by vibration.
  5. Remove the distributor and inspect the reluctor wheel for cracks, chips, or metallic buildup; check shaft bearing play that could alter sensor gap.
  6. If all components test good, verify PCM software is up to date and monitor the signal at the PCM connector to confirm the fault lies inside the module.
