P0334 indicates the powertrain control module has detected an intermittent electrical fault in the circuit for knock sensor B, which monitors abnormal combustion vibrations. The signal is dropping in and out of the expected voltage or continuity range rather than failing outright. This can prevent the PCM from reliably retarding ignition timing to protect the engine from damaging detonation.

4. Improper mounting or physical damage

A sensor that is over-torqued, under-torqued, or seated on a damaged boss may have an unstable case ground, and its element may not couple consistently to engine block vibrations.

5. PCM internal fault

A rare input-circuit or signal-processing failure inside the control module can cause it to perceive a good sensor signal as intermittent; this should only be considered after the sensor and wiring are thoroughly verified.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the knock sensor, its connector, and the nearby harness for corrosion, contamination, chafing, or loose pins.
  2. Monitor the sensor signal with a scan tool or oscilloscope while gently wiggling the harness and connector to reproduce the intermittent fault.
  3. Measure the sensor's resistance and compare it to manufacturer specifications; replace the sensor if readings are out of range or unstable.
  4. Perform continuity and isolation tests on the circuit between the sensor and the PCM connector to verify there are no opens, shorts to ground, or shorts to voltage.
  5. Inspect the PCM connector for backed-out, corroded, or damaged terminals only after confirming the sensor and external wiring are electrically sound.
