P0365 — Camshaft Position Sensor B Circuit Bank 1

This code indicates the engine computer is not receiving a valid electrical signal from the camshaft position sensor B (typically the exhaust camshaft) on bank 1. The computer uses this signal to time fuel injection and variable camshaft operation, so a missing or corrupted signal triggers this fault.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed camshaft position sensor B (bank 1)

The sensor itself has failed internally or its output signal has degraded. This is the most common cause of a direct circuit code for this sensor.

2. Wiring or connector damage

Chafed, corroded, broken, or disconnected wiring between the sensor and the PCM can interrupt the signal or reference voltage. Heat and vibration near the engine commonly degrade these circuits.

3. Sensor reluctor wheel / tone ring damage

The trigger wheel on the camshaft that the sensor reads may be damaged, loose, or contaminated with debris, causing an unreadable signal even if the sensor is functional.

4. Oil contamination or low oil pressure affecting VVT

Sludged oil or low oil pressure can prevent the camshaft phaser from reaching expected position, which may set camshaft sensor-related codes if timing is outside expected range.

5. Engine computer (PCM/ECM) failure

A fault inside the PCM's input circuit for this sensor is rare and should only be considered after all wiring, sensor, and mechanical causes are fully eliminated.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the camshaft position sensor B connector and wiring harness for corrosion, bent pins, chafing, or loose connections.
  2. Check for technical service bulletins related to camshaft sensor codes for this engine family.
  3. Use a scan tool to compare live camshaft position B (bank 1) data to camshaft A and to bank 2 sensors if applicable, looking for missing or erratic signal.
  4. Test sensor reference voltage, ground, and signal return at the sensor connector with a multimeter or oscilloscope per manufacturer specifications.
  5. If electrical values are correct at the connector but no signal is present, inspect the camshaft reluctor wheel for damage through the sensor bore before replacing the sensor.
  6. Only consider PCM testing or replacement after the sensor, wiring, and reluctor wheel are all confirmed intact and correct.

Can I drive with a P0365 code?

Short distances may be possible, but extended driving is not recommended. The engine may run poorly, stall, or fail to restart, and continuing to drive can damage catalytic converters if fuel timing is incorrect.

Is the PCM the problem?

Almost never. PCM failure is the least likely cause for this code. The sensor, wiring, or reluctor wheel account for the overwhelming majority of P0365 cases. Replacing the PCM without ruling out all other causes is a common and costly mistake.

Is this the same as a crankshaft position sensor code?

No. P0365 specifically refers to the camshaft position sensor B circuit on bank 1, which is a different sensor and serves a different function than the crankshaft position sensor, though both provide timing data to the PCM.

Could an oil change fix this?

If the code is caused by sludged oil or low oil pressure affecting variable valve timing, an oil change may help. However, if the sensor or wiring is faulty, an oil change will not resolve the code.
