P0386 indicates that the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected the crankshaft position sensor B signal is outside its expected range or showing abnormal performance. The CKP sensor B provides the PCM with engine speed and position information needed for fuel injection and ignition timing. When the signal is erratic, missing, or out of spec, the PCM sets this code.

If the sensor is mounted too far from or too close to the reluctor wheel, the signal amplitude may fall outside the PCM's expected range.

5. PCM/ECM failure

Although rare, a malfunction inside the PCM's input circuit can falsely flag a sensor performance issue; this is considered only after sensor, wiring, and reluctor checks are normal.

  2. Visually inspect the crankshaft position sensor B, its connector, and wiring for damage, corrosion, or loose connections.

  4. Examine the crankshaft reluctor wheel for missing, broken, or contaminated teeth; clean or replace as needed.
  5. Monitor the CKP sensor signal with an oscilloscope while cranking the engine to verify a consistent, square‑wave pattern; if signal is absent or erratic after confirming sensor and wiring are good, consider PCM testing or replacement.
