P0416 — Air System Switching Valve B Circuit Open

P0416 indicates the engine control module has detected an open electrical circuit in the secondary air injection switching valve B. This valve controls the routing of fresh air into the exhaust stream during cold starts to reduce emissions. An open circuit means the solenoid or wiring has a break that prevents electrical current from reaching the component.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed switching valve solenoid

The internal coil of the electric switching valve has burned out or broken internally, creating an open circuit that the PCM detects.

2. Wiring harness open

A break, chafing, or disconnect in the wires between the PCM and the valve prevents electrical continuity.

3. Corroded electrical connector

Moisture intrusion or oxidation at the valve's electrical connector creates high resistance or a complete open circuit.

4. Poor pin fit at PCM connector

The terminal pins at the engine control module connector may be damaged, corroded, or backed out, interrupting the circuit.

5. PCM driver failure

In rare cases, the output driver inside the engine control module that supplies power or ground to the valve has failed.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors to the switching valve for damage, corrosion, or disconnection.
  2. Disconnect the valve and measure the resistance across its solenoid terminals; compare to manufacturer specifications (typically 20-60 ohms; infinite indicates an open coil).
  3. With the connector attached, back-probe the circuit to verify battery voltage and ground are present at the valve when the PCM commands the system on.
  4. Check continuity between the valve connector and the PCM connector for the control circuit wire to identify any breaks in the harness.
  5. If the valve, wiring, and connectors test good, verify the PCM is grounding or powering the circuit properly; replace PCM only if all other causes are ruled out.
