P0438 indicates the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected a voltage signal from the bank 2 catalyst temperature sensor (sensor 1) that exceeds the expected maximum threshold. This sensor monitors catalytic converter efficiency by measuring exhaust temperature upstream of the converter on the bank 2 cylinder bank.

1. Failed catalyst temperature sensor

The sensor element itself has degraded or shorted internally, sending an erroneously high voltage signal to the PCM.

2. Wiring or connector fault

A short to voltage in the sensor signal circuit, damaged insulation, or corroded connector pins can pull the signal voltage high.

3. Exhaust leak near sensor

An upstream exhaust leak allows outside air to contact the sensor, causing abnormal temperature readings that the PCM interprets as a high circuit voltage.

4. Catalytic converter overheating

Misfire, rich fuel condition, or other issues causing excessive exhaust temperatures can drive the sensor reading legitimately high.

5. PCM/ECM fault

Internal PCM driver or processing error for the sensor circuit is possible but rare; verify all wiring and sensor function before considering module replacement.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all stored codes and freeze-frame data; note if misfire or fuel-trim codes are present.
  2. Visually inspect the bank 2 sensor 1 catalyst temperature sensor, its pigtail, and connector for damage, corrosion, or heat-related melting.
  3. With the key on/engine off, measure sensor signal voltage at the PCM connector; compare to specification (typically 0.5–4.5 V range).
  4. Check continuity and resistance of the sensor signal, ground, and reference voltage circuits between sensor and PCM.
  5. Inspect the exhaust system for leaks between the engine and the sensor location; repair any leaks found.
  6. If all circuits and the sensor test good, verify PCM output with a known-good sensor or substitute sensor before condemning the module.

No. These sensors are sealed units; contamination or internal failure cannot be fixed by cleaning. If the sensor is faulty, it must be replaced.

Does P0438 mean the catalytic converter is bad?

Not directly. The code points to a sensor circuit voltage problem. However, an overheating converter (from misfire or rich condition) can cause the sensor to read high, so converter health should be evaluated if no sensor or wiring fault is found.

Will the code clear itself if the problem is intermittent?
