P0446 — Evap System Vent Control Circuit

Generic OBD-II · all makesPowertrain (engine & transmission)

This code indicates an electrical or functional problem with the evaporative emission control system's vent valve circuit. The vent valve allows fresh air into the EVAP system during purging and seals the system for leak tests; when this circuit fails, the system cannot properly manage fuel vapors.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty vent solenoid valve

The valve itself often fails due to dirt, rust, or carbon debris, causing it to stick open or closed electronically.

2. Wiring or connector damage

Corroded, frayed, or disconnected wiring and connectors can disrupt the electrical circuit to the vent valve.

3. Blocked vent hose or filter

Debris, mud, or spider webs can clog the vent hose or air inlet filter, preventing proper airflow and triggering the circuit code.

4. Saturated charcoal canister

A failing canister can release charcoal debris that clogs the vent valve, causing the circuit to read as faulty.

5. Failed PCM/ECM

A defective engine computer is extremely rare and almost never the actual cause of this code.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the vent valve, wiring harness, and connectors for damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
  2. Apply battery voltage and ground directly to the vent valve to test if it actuates properly and seals vacuum.
  3. Check the vent hose and atmospheric vent filter for clogs, mud, or insect nests.
  4. Use a multimeter to check for proper voltage, ground, and circuit resistance between the PCM and the vent valve.
  5. Inspect the charcoal canister and vent valve for loose charcoal debris indicating canister failure.

Frequently asked

Can I drive my car with a P0446 code?

Yes, this code rarely affects engine performance or driveability, but it will cause a failed emissions test.

Why do some mechanics say I need a new PCM for this code, and are they right?

They are almost certainly wrong. Replacing the PCM is rarely the fix for P0446. The actual cause is almost always a physical failure of the vent valve, corroded wiring, or a clog in the vent hose.

Why does my gas pump keep clicking off when I fill up?

If the vent valve is stuck closed, the EVAP system cannot relieve the pressure built up during refueling, causing the pump nozzle to shut off prematurely.

Can debris really cause this code?

Yes, spiders, mud, and dust commonly clog the EVAP vent filter and cause the vent valve to stick, triggering this code.
