P0455 indicates the engine control module has detected a large leak in the evaporative emission control (EVAP) system, which is designed to trap fuel vapors and prevent them from escaping into the atmosphere. The diagnostic test typically pulls a vacuum on the sealed fuel tank and EVAP components; if the system cannot hold pressure, this code sets. A 'large leak' is generally defined as a hole roughly 0.040 inch (1 mm) or larger.

1. Loose, damaged, or incorrect fuel cap

2. Faulty or stuck-open EVAP purge valve

A purge valve that fails to seal when closed creates a continuous path between the fuel tank and engine intake, preventing the EVAP system from holding vacuum during the leak test.

3. Leaking EVAP canister vent valve

The vent valve is normally closed during testing. If it sticks open or its seal is damaged, outside air enters the system and the pressure test fails.

4. Cracked or disconnected EVAP hoses and lines

Rubber hoses, plastic lines, and fittings between the tank, canister, purge valve, and intake can crack, split, or come loose, creating a large leak path.

5. Damaged fuel tank or filler neck

Corrosion, impact damage, or a deteriorated seal at the fuel filler neck can allow vapors to leak directly, though this is less common than valve or cap problems.

6. Faulty fuel tank pressure sensor or PCM logic issue

A sensor that misreads pressure or, very rarely, a PCM calibration or hardware fault can falsely report a leak, but this should only be considered after mechanical leaks are ruled out.

  1. Inspect and reseat the fuel cap; replace it if the seal is cracked, the threads are damaged, or it is the wrong cap, then clear the code and run the EVAP monitor.

  3. Command the purge valve closed and check whether it holds vacuum; repair or replace if it leaks or fails to close.
  4. Test the canister vent valve for proper opening and closing; verify it seals completely when commanded closed.
  5. Inspect all EVAP hoses, lines, and connections for cracks, kinks, or disconnections, paying close attention to areas near heat sources or moving parts.
  6. If no mechanical leak is found, compare the fuel tank pressure sensor reading to a known-good reference and consider PCM or software concerns only as a last step.
