5. Faulty fan control module

On vehicles with variable-speed fan systems, a failed driver module that cannot process the PCM signal or supply power to the fan will trigger this code.

6. PCM internal driver failure

Rarely, the output driver within the PCM that commands the fan relay or module may fail; this should only be considered after all wiring, grounds, and components are verified good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the fan assembly, wiring harness, and connectors for obvious damage, burning, corrosion, or disconnected terminals
  2. Test the secondary fan motor by applying direct battery power and ground to confirm it runs smoothly and draws appropriate current
  3. Check the fuse and swap the fan relay with a known-good identical relay to eliminate relay failure as the cause
  4. With a scan tool commanding Fan 2 on, measure voltage at the control circuit input to verify the PCM signal reaches the relay or fan module
  5. Check ground continuity between the fan motor ground terminal and the battery negative post to ensure less than 0.1 volt drop
