P0502 means the powertrain control module is detecting a lower-than-expected signal from the vehicle speed sensor circuit. The sensor reports road speed from a transmission-mounted or wheel-mounted source, and a "low" reading usually means a weak, interrupted, or missing signal. This can affect the speedometer, transmission shifting, cruise control, and ABS or traction-control functions that rely on vehicle speed data.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed vehicle speed sensor

The sensor itself is the most common source of a low or absent signal. Internal coil or Hall-element failure, contamination, or wear can reduce output voltage or frequency below the PCM threshold.

2. Wiring fault in the VSS circuit

An open wire, short-to-ground, or short-to-reference voltage in the sensor signal or supply lines will produce a low or erratic circuit reading. Harness damage near the transmission, exhaust, or suspension is a frequent cause.

3. Corroded or loose connector

Poor pin contact, moisture intrusion, or terminal spread at the sensor or inline connector increases resistance and can drop the signal below the PCM's acceptable range.

4. Damaged tone ring or incorrect sensor air gap

A cracked, chipped, or debris-coated reluctor ring, or a sensor that is loose or improperly seated, weakens the generated signal even though the sensor and wiring are intact.

5. Incorrect tire size or final-drive ratio

Tires, wheels, or axle gearing that change output speed by a large margin can push the signal outside the expected range on some applications, though this is less common than a hardware fault.

6. PCM input circuit fault

A genuine PCM failure is uncommon. It should be considered only after the sensor, wiring, connector, and tone ring have been verified, because the code almost always traces to the circuit or sensor itself.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Inspect the VSS, harness, and connector for physical damage, oil contamination, corrosion, or backed-out terminals.
  2. Compare the sensor's resistance, voltage, or frequency output to the manufacturer's specification; a static check can reveal an internally failed sensor.
  3. Monitor live VSS data while raising the drive wheels or driving the vehicle to see whether any signal is produced and whether it matches road speed.
  4. Test the signal and power/ground circuits for continuity, shorts to ground, shorts to power, and proper reference voltage at the sensor connector.
  5. Remove and inspect the tone ring or reluctor wheel for cracks, missing teeth, heavy rust, or debris; verify the sensor mounting and air gap.
  6. If all sensor and circuit tests pass and the PCM still reports zero or low input, evaluate the PCM input circuit and software calibration as a last resort.
