P0612 — Fuel Injector Control Module Relay Control

P0612 means the engine computer has detected a fault in the low-side control circuit for the relay that powers the fuel injector control module. When this circuit fails, the relay may not close or its operation cannot be verified, which can prevent injector control. The code indicates an electrical problem in the relay control path rather than a mechanical injector failure.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty fuel injector control module relay

The relay coil or contacts can fail from heat and age, so the PCM cannot energize or verify the relay and sets P0612.

2. Wiring or connector fault in relay control circuit

Opens, shorts to ground or power, corrosion, or pin damage in the relay coil control wire or power and ground paths disrupt relay operation.

3. Blown fuse or poor power/ground supply

A blown fuse, fusible link, or loose ground feeding the relay or control module removes voltage needed for relay control and feedback.

4. Faulty fuel injector control module

If the FICM draws excessive current, has internal damage, or returns an unexpected feedback signal, the PCM may flag the relay control circuit.

5. PCM/ECM relay driver failure

Although uncommon, the internal transistor or driver that grounds the relay coil can fail; this should only be considered after wiring, relay, fuses, and module are ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all DTCs and review freeze-frame data; check for related fuel, injector, or relay codes.
  2. Locate the fuel injector control module relay and verify its coil resistance and operation; swap with a known-good relay of the same type if available.
  3. Inspect fuses, connectors, and wiring for the relay coil, battery supply, and ground circuits; repair opens, shorts, or corrosion as needed.
  4. Check voltage and ground at the relay socket and fuel injector control module with the key on; confirm the PCM provides control when commanded.
  5. If the relay, wiring, fuses, and module are normal, evaluate PCM output with a scan tool or scope; replace or reprogram the PCM only after all other causes are excluded.
