P0658 indicates the powertrain control module has detected a lower-than-specified voltage on a designated actuator supply circuit, often labeled "Actuator Supply Voltage A." This circuit provides operating voltage to one or more engine or transmission actuators, and a low reading typically points to excessive resistance, a short to ground, or a faulty component on that circuit rather than the control module itself.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Short to ground in actuator supply circuit wiring

Chafed, pinched, or melted wires can contact the chassis ground, pulling the monitored supply voltage low and causing the PCM to set the code.

2. Internally shorted actuator or solenoid

An actuator with an internal short to ground can overload the supply line, resulting in a voltage drop that the PCM interprets as a circuit low condition.

3. Corroded, loose, or damaged connector pins

Poor pin contact or moisture intrusion creates excessive resistance or an intermittent ground path within the supply circuit.

4. Faulty fuse or relay in the power feed

If the actuator supply passes through a fuse or relay, an open fuse or stuck relay can cause a genuine low-voltage or no-voltage condition.

5. PCM internal voltage driver failure

The engine computer’s internal supply driver can fail, but this is uncommon and should only be considered after all external wiring, connectors, and actuators are ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Identify the specific actuator(s) assigned to the "A" supply circuit using manufacturer wiring diagrams.
  2. Visually inspect harnesses, connectors, and pins for damage, corrosion, or exposed wire.
  3. Disconnect actuators one at a time and recheck circuit voltage to isolate a shorted component.
  4. Perform continuity and resistance tests between the supply circuit and ground to locate shorts or high-resistance joints.
  5. Verify power distribution components such as fuses and relays associated with the actuator feed.
  6. If all external causes are eliminated, evaluate the PCM output driver per factory procedures before considering module replacement.
