P2018 indicates that the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has detected an intermittent fault in the circuit of the intake manifold runner position sensor/switch for Bank 1. This sensor monitors the position of the variable‑geometry intake runner flap, and when its signal becomes unstable or drops out, the PCM sets the code. The problem is usually electrical (wiring/connector or the sensor itself) rather than a mechanical failure of the runner flap.
The sensor’s internal circuitry can wear out, causing its voltage signal to drop or fluctuate intermittently. This is the most common source of P2018.
Broken, chafed, or corroded wires, as well as loose or oxidized connectors at the sensor or PCM, can create intermittent opens or shorts in the signal circuit.
The motor or vacuum diaphragm that moves the intake runner flap may be sticking or not delivering consistent motion, leading to irregular sensor readings.
Deposits can cause the flap to bind intermittently, which may affect the sensor’s position signal even though the electrical circuit is intact.
The PCM’s input circuit for the sensor can occasionally fail, but this is far less common than external wiring or sensor issues.
In the vast majority of cases the PCM is not the problem. Replacing it rarely resolves P2018; the issue is usually in the sensor, wiring, or mechanical runner assembly. PCM replacement should only be considered after all other plausible causes are ruled out.
You can usually continue driving, but the engine may enter a reduced‑power limp mode, and you may notice poorer acceleration, lower fuel economy, or an unstable idle. It’s advisable to diagnose and repair the fault promptly to avoid potential drivability issues.
Cleaning the throttle body or intake manifold may improve airflow if carbon buildup is present, but it does not address the intermittent electrical signal that P2018 describes. The code will likely persist unless the sensor or wiring issue is resolved.
With the engine off, you can measure the sensor’s resistance across its terminals and compare it to the manufacturer’s specification. If the resistance is out of spec or changes erratically while moving the runner flap, the sensor is likely at fault. A stable resistance but an intermittent voltage at the PCM connector points to a wiring or connector issue.
