How it's diagnosed

  2. Disconnect the solenoid and measure its resistance; compare the reading to manufacturer specifications and replace the solenoid if it is shorted or out of spec.
  3. With the solenoid disconnected, check the control circuit for battery voltage when it should be low and test for a short to power between the control wire and B+.
  4. Verify continuity and integrity of the control wire between the solenoid connector and the PCM, and check the solenoid ground circuit.
  5. Command the VVT solenoid on and off with a scan tool while monitoring commanded state and circuit voltage; if the solenoid and wiring are good, evaluate the PCM output only after all else is ruled out.
