Code P2100 indicates the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an open circuit in the throttle actuator control motor circuit. This motor is part of the electronic throttle body and controls the throttle plate position based on driver input. An open circuit means the electrical path is broken, preventing the motor from operating and typically triggering a failsafe or limp mode.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Faulty throttle body assembly

The throttle actuator motor inside the throttle body has an internal open circuit, often due to wear, contamination, or electrical failure. This is the most common cause.

2. Damaged wiring or connectors

Broken, chafed, or shorted wires in the throttle actuator control circuit can cause an open circuit. Connector terminals may be bent, pushed back, or corroded.

3. Blown fuse or faulty relay

A blown fuse or defective relay supplying power to the throttle actuator motor circuit will result in an open circuit condition.

4. Corroded or loose electrical connections

Corrosion, moisture, or loose pins at the throttle body connector or PCM connector can interrupt the circuit.

5. PCM failure (rare)

An internal fault in the powertrain control module is possible but very unlikely. The PCM should only be suspected after all other causes are ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the throttle body connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or loose pins. Check the throttle body for contamination or mechanical binding.
  2. Check all related fuses and relays. Replace any blown fuses and retest.
  3. With the ignition off, disconnect the throttle body connector and measure resistance across the motor terminals. Compare to manufacturer specifications; an open circuit indicates a failed throttle body.
  4. Inspect the wiring harness between the throttle body and PCM for continuity and shorts to ground or power. Repair any broken or shorted wires.
  5. If wiring and throttle body test good, use a scan tool to command the throttle motor while back-probing the PCM connector to verify the signal. Lack of signal may indicate a PCM fault, but this is rare.
