P2116 means the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected that the rest, or minimum stop, signal from throttle/pedal position sensor E is outside its expected range or does not match the learned closed-position value. This sensor is one of the redundant position sensors used to monitor accelerator pedal or throttle blade position. A flagged minimum-stop problem can make the PCM distrust the throttle control signal and force reduced-power or limp mode.

1. Faulty throttle or pedal position sensor E

The internal sensor E track can wear, drift, or fail so its minimum output voltage sits outside the calibrated window, causing the PCM to set the code.

2. Wiring or connector fault in sensor E circuit

Open, shorted, corroded, or poorly fitted pins and harness damage can alter the sensor signal at rest, producing the same out-of-range minimum-stop reading as a failed sensor.

3. Throttle plate binding or carbon buildup

If sensor E reads throttle blade angle, carbon deposits, mechanical binding, or a weak return spring can prevent the plate from reaching its true minimum stop position.

4. Incorrect installation or unlearned minimum stop

After throttle body or pedal service, an incomplete relearn or improper mounting can leave the rest signal outside the expected range until the system is recalibrated.

5. PCM issue

A PCM fault is possible but uncommon; it should be considered only after the sensor, wiring, and mechanical causes have been ruled out and a relearn has failed.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all DTCs and freeze-frame data; inspect the sensor E connector and harness for corrosion, pin damage, or chafing.
  2. With a scan tool, observe sensor E voltage or percentage at rest and through the full pedal/throttle range; compare to manufacturer specs and look for dead spots or out-of-range minimum values.
  3. Inspect the throttle body bore and plate for carbon or binding; verify the mechanical stop and return spring action, cleaning only as the manufacturer recommends.
  4. Perform the specified throttle or accelerator pedal relearn/reset procedure, clear codes, and retest under key-on/engine-off and driving conditions.
  5. If the sensor, wiring, and mechanical systems are normal and the code returns, evaluate PCM data and consider reprogramming or replacement as a last resort.
