A weak 5-volt reference or shared ground circuit can skew one of the redundant sensor signals without fully disabling it.

5. Engine computer (PCM/ECM) failure

Rarely, an internal ADC or input circuit fault in the PCM can misread one of the pedal position channels; this should only be considered after all sensor and wiring checks pass.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Read all stored codes and freeze-frame data to confirm P2139 is current and check for related throttle, pedal, or voltage codes.
  2. Visually inspect the throttle pedal position sensor connector and harness for corrosion, bent pins, chafing, or moisture.
  3. With the pedal at rest and during a slow sweep, monitor both pedal position signal voltages on a scan tool to see which one drops out, spikes, or fails to track the other.
  4. Back-probe the sensor signals with a multimeter or oscilloscope to verify 5V reference, ground, and both signal voltages while slowly depressing the pedal.
  5. Perform a wiggle test on the harness and connector while watching live data to reveal intermittent opens or shorts.
  6. If wiring and voltages are correct but one signal still misbehaves, replace the pedal position sensor assembly; only consider PCM testing if the fault persists with a confirmed-good sensor and harness.
