P2159 means the engine or transmission control module has detected an out-of-range, erratic, or implausible signal from the secondary vehicle speed sensor (VSS B). The module compares this input against expected values and other speed references, and sets the code when the comparison fails.

1. Faulty vehicle speed sensor B

The sensor itself can fail internally, producing no signal, an intermittent signal, or a signal outside the expected range. This is the single most common cause of P2159.

2. Wiring or connector problems in the VSS B circuit

Open, shorted, corroded, or poorly connected wiring between the sensor and the control module can distort or interrupt the signal.

3. Damaged or contaminated tone ring / reluctor wheel

5. Faulty related speed source or module communication issue

On vehicles that derive VSS B data from an ABS wheel-speed sensor or another module, a failing source sensor or bus communication fault can set this code.

6. Powertrain control module fault

A rare internal PCM/ECM fault can misinterpret a valid speed-sensor signal. This should only be considered after the sensor, wiring, and tone ring have been ruled out.

  2. Inspect the VSS B sensor, connector, and wiring for corrosion, damage, looseness, and correct mounting/air gap

  4. Examine the tone ring or reluctor wheel for damage, debris, run-out, or incorrect tooth count
  5. Compare VSS B data against VSS A, ABS wheel-speed, and GPS/road-speed values to isolate the errant source
  6. Consider PCM replacement only after all mechanical and electrical causes are eliminated and confirmed
