The code specifically flags wiring, connector, or internal sensor electrical faults rather than performance or signal-range issues.

The sensor's heater element or sensing cell has burned open, shorted internally, or drifted out of specified resistance due to thermal cycling and exhaust exposure. This is the statistically dominant failure mode for this code.

2. Wiring or connector damage

High under-hood temperatures and vibration can chafe, corrode, or open circuits in the harness between the sensor and PCM, especially near the exhaust manifold. Water intrusion into the connector can also cause short circuits.

3. Blown heater circuit fuse or faulty relay

The NOx sensor requires a heated element to reach operating temperature; a blown fuse, faulty relay, or open power-feed circuit will set a circuit malfunction code immediately.

4. Exhaust leak upstream of sensor

Significant leaks can allow oxygen ingress or cool exhaust gases rapidly, causing the sensor heater to overwork and fail, or inducing erratic voltages that mimic circuit faults.

5. PCM driver failure

In rare cases the PCM's internal circuitry that supplies reference voltage or monitors the sensor signal may fail, though this is far less common than sensor or wiring faults.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the NOx sensor, connector, and wiring for corrosion, chafing, melted insulation, or terminal push-outs
  2. Check vehicle-specific service data for technical service bulletins (TSBs) related to harness routing or connector sealing
  3. Verify heater circuit fuse and relay integrity; test for battery voltage at the sensor heater power pin with key on
  4. Measure heater element resistance and signal circuit continuity against manufacturer specifications using a digital multimeter
  5. Back-probe the sensor signal wire and observe voltage output while monitoring live data for rationality; compare with a known-good waveform if available
  6. If all electrical tests pass and no external faults exist, evaluate the PCM after confirming proper ground paths and reference voltage outputs
