This code indicates the engine computer has detected an electrical short between the oxygen sensor's signal circuit and its internal heater circuit for the upstream O2 sensor on bank 2. Bank 2 is the side of the engine that does not contain cylinder #1, and sensor 1 is the upstream (pre-catalytic converter) sensor. The fault is almost always in the sensor itself or its wiring, not the engine computer.

A sensor with the wrong pin configuration for this vehicle can internally cross the signal and heater circuits.

5. Engine computer (PCM/ECM) internal fault

Extremely rare; a failed driver circuit inside the PCM could theoretically cause this code, but it should only be considered after the sensor, wiring, and connector are fully verified good.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the bank 2 sensor 1 wiring harness and connector for heat damage, chafing, corrosion, or bent pins.
  2. Disconnect the O2 sensor and check for continuity or shorting between the signal and heater pins at the sensor itself.
  3. With the sensor disconnected, test the vehicle-side harness for shorts between the signal and heater circuits and to ground.
  4. If the sensor shows internal shorting, replace the sensor and clear the code; then verify it does not return.
  5. If wiring and connector test good but the code persists with a known-good sensor, verify PCM connector integrity before considering PCM fault.
