P2246 is set when the Powertrain Control Module detects that the reference voltage supplied to the upstream (Bank 1, Sensor 1) oxygen sensor is higher than the expected range. This reference voltage is used by the sensor to generate its signal; an out‑of‑range high voltage usually points to a fault in the sensor itself, its wiring, or the PCM output.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed upstream O2 sensor (internal reference voltage circuit)

The sensor's internal reference voltage regulator has failed, causing the reference line to read high. This is the most common cause of P2246.

2. Wiring harness short to voltage or open circuit

Damage to the sensor harness (chaffing, rodent damage, heat exposure) can cause the reference wire to be pulled up to battery voltage or lose continuity, resulting in a high reading.

3. Corroded, loose, or damaged connector at the sensor or PCM

Poor contact in the sensor connector or the PCM side connector can introduce resistance or voltage offsets that appear as a high reference voltage.

4. PCM reference voltage output fault

A malfunction within the PCM's reference voltage driver circuit can produce an abnormally high voltage, though this is far less common than sensor or wiring issues.

5. Aftermarket modifications or improper sensor installation

Non‑OEM sensors, incorrect wiring splices, or sensor grounds that are not properly connected can cause the reference voltage to read outside specification.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan for codes and note freeze‑frame data to confirm P2246 and check for related codes.
  2. Visually inspect the O2 sensor wiring harness and connectors for signs of wear, corrosion, loose pins, or moisture intrusion.
  3. Measure the reference voltage at the sensor harness with the key on, engine off (KOEO); it should be within the manufacturer's specified range (typically ~0.45 V).
  4. Test the sensor's signal voltage and resistance according to the service procedure; compare to specifications.
  5. If wiring and connector are good, replace the upstream O2 sensor, clear the code, and re‑test to see if P2246 returns.
  6. If the code persists after sensor replacement, perform a PCM reference voltage output test or substitute a known‑good PCM to rule out module failure.
