A battery that cannot hold proper voltage can cause momentary drops in the power feed to the ECM, triggering the intermittent signal.
If the alternator does not regulate voltage correctly, the ECM may see fluctuating power, especially under electrical load.
Chafed, corroded, or loose wiring between the battery, alternator, and ECM can create intermittent opens or high‑resistance paths.
Insufficient grounding of the engine or ECM can cause voltage fluctuations even when the primary power source is stable.
When the switch or relay that supplies power to the ECM wears out, it may intermittently cut off or reduce voltage to the module.
Although rare, the control module itself can fail to process the power signal correctly; this should be ruled out only after the more common causes are eliminated.
It indicates that the ECM’s power supply is unstable, which can cause drivability issues such as stalling or intermittent loss of power. The problem should be diagnosed promptly.
In most cases the ECM is not the root cause; the fault usually lies in the battery, charging system, wiring, or grounds. Replacing the module rarely resolves the issue.
You may be able to drive short distances, but intermittent power loss can lead to engine stall or reduced performance. It is advisable to have the vehicle inspected before extended trips.
