This sensor monitors refrigerant pressure on one side of the A/C system (typically a second or secondary pressure transducer) and the PCM uses its reading to control compressor clutch engagement, cooling fan operation, and system protection. A 'range/performance' fault means the signal is present but falls outside the expected values for current operating conditions, rather than being completely open or shorted.

1. Faulty A/C refrigerant pressure sensor

The sensor itself is the most common cause. Internal element drift, loss of calibration, or internal short/open can produce a signal that is technically valid but out of the expected pressure-to-voltage range, triggering a performance fault rather than a hard circuit fault.

2. Wiring or connector problems in the sensor circuit

Corroded, chafed, or loose pins at the pressure sensor connector, damaged harness insulation, or high resistance in the 5-volt reference or signal-return circuits can skew the sensor's output. Moisture intrusion in the connector is a particularly common contributor on aging vehicles.

3. Refrigerant charge or system condition out of specification

Genuinely abnormal system pressure — from undercharge, overcharge, contamination, or a restriction — causes the sensor to report a value that is correct but outside what the PCM expects. The fault is often the system, not the sensor, and proper diagnosis must rule this out before condemning the sensor.

4. Restricted expansion device or receiver-drier

A partially blocked orifice tube or expansion valve, or a saturated receiver-drier, can create abnormal high- and low-side pressure relationships that the sensor reports truthfully but that fall outside the expected operating window.

5. A/C compressor or clutch mechanical issue

An internal compressor failure, a failing clutch, or an over-pressurized system due to a non-return valve problem can produce pressure readings the PCM interprets as out of range. These are less common than sensor or charge-related causes.

6. PCM/ECM internal fault (rare)

A failure inside the PCM's analog input circuitry for this sensor is possible but uncommon. The PCM should only be suspected after the sensor, harness, and actual system pressures have all been verified.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all stored DTCs and review freeze-frame data to see the conditions (pressure value, engine load, refrigerant temperature) present when the code set.
  2. Connect an A/C manifold gauge set and compare the actual static and running high- and low-side pressures to the sensor's reported values to determine whether the system is genuinely out of range or the sensor is lying.
  3. Visually inspect the pressure sensor connector and harness for corrosion, bent pins, oil contamination, and chafing; repair any wiring faults before replacing the sensor.
  4. Back-probe the sensor's 5-volt reference, ground, and signal wires with the connector live to verify reference voltage, ground integrity, and signal voltage against the manufacturer's pressure-to-voltage table.
  5. If the wiring and signals are correct and the sensor's output still does not match the gauge reading, replace the A/C refrigerant pressure sensor.
  6. Only after sensor, wiring, and refrigerant system all check out should the PCM be considered as a possible cause; this is an uncommon root failure for P2516.
