Chafed insulation, broken leads near the transmission case, oil-soaked connectors, or corroded pins are frequent because the sensor sits in a hot, fluid-exposed environment and the harness flexes with engine movement.

4. Damaged tone wheel, reluctor, or input shaft

Chips, cracks, or missing teeth on the input shaft tone wheel produce an irregular waveform the PCM interprets as out-of-range. This often accompanies metallic debris in the pan.

5. Internal mechanical transmission wear

Excessive input shaft play, bearing wear, or torque converter hub damage can cause signal variation that mimics an electrical sensor fault. Usually accompanied by noise, slippage, or burnt fluid.

6. PCM or TCM internal fault

Control module failures affecting this circuit are uncommon. Drivers are sometimes advised to replace the PCM for P2766, but that is rarely the actual cause and should be considered only after sensors, wiring, fluid, and mechanical sources have been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  2. Check automatic transmission fluid level, color, and smell; inspect the pan for excessive metal debris if accessible.
  3. Visually inspect the sensor B connector and harness for oil contamination, corrosion, broken wires, and proper routing away from heat sources.
  4. Back-probe the sensor circuit to measure resistance, reference voltage, and ground; compare to manufacturer specifications.
  5. Use a lab scope or scan-tool graphing to view the sensor's AC waveform at varying engine speeds and compare it to sensor A (if equipped) and the output speed sensor for plausibility.
  6. If electrical and fluid checks pass, inspect the tone wheel/input shaft and, if needed, perform a mechanical evaluation of the transmission before considering a control module replacement.
