P2896 indicates the powertrain control module has detected a lower-than-expected signal from the ion current sensing circuit for cylinder 2. Ion sensing uses the spark plug or a dedicated sensor to measure combustion-ion current for misfire and knock detection, so a "Low" reading usually points to a weak signal path on that cylinder.

A fouled, worn, or incorrectly gapped spark plug can reduce combustion-ion current, causing the circuit to read low even though the coil and wiring are intact.

5. PCM hardware or calibration fault

A rare internal PCM input failure or outdated calibration can misread the ion sense signal. This should be considered only after the coil, plug, wiring, and connectors have been ruled out.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Record freeze-frame data and verify the code is specific to cylinder 2; clear the code and see if it returns under the same operating conditions.
  2. Visually inspect the cylinder 2 coil connector, wiring, and ground for corrosion, pin push-out, chafing, or moisture intrusion.
  3. Swap the cylinder 2 ion sense coil or ignition coil assembly with another cylinder; if the fault follows the coil, replace the coil assembly.
  4. Remove and inspect the cylinder 2 spark plug for fouling, wear, or incorrect gap; replace if necessary before further electrical testing.
  5. Measure continuity and resistance in the ion sense signal circuit between the coil and PCM, and check for shorts to ground or power.
  6. If all hardware tests pass and the code persists, update or reflash the PCM calibration only as directed by manufacturer service information; replace the PCM only as a last resort.
