Broken, chafed, or corroded wires or a loose connector can interrupt the control circuit, causing an open condition.
A failed fuse or protective link in the solenoid’s power supply will cut voltage and create an open circuit.
If the ground return path for the solenoid is broken, the PCM will detect an open circuit even though power may be present.
The PCM’s output driver for that circuit can fail, but this is the least common cause and should be investigated only after the above items are ruled out.
In most cases the fault is the solenoid, wiring, or a blown fuse. The PCM is rarely at fault; it should be replaced only after all other electrical components have been confirmed good.
You can usually continue driving, but the engine may run roughly, use more fuel, and the cylinder‑deactivation system (if equipped) will be disabled. Have the issue diagnosed soon to avoid possible damage.
The P3477 code is used on various engine families that employ cylinder‑deactivation or variable‑valve‑timing control, not exclusively V8s.
