U0017 means the medium‑speed CAN bus is detected as stuck at a high voltage level (bus‑high condition). This usually results from a short to battery voltage, a faulty transceiver, or damaged wiring that forces the bus dominant/recessive level incorrectly.

1. Short to battery voltage on CAN‑H or CAN‑L wiring

6. PCM/ECM internal CAN‑interface fault

A defect in the PCM/ECM’s CAN controller can falsely report a bus‑high, but this is rare and should be considered only after wiring and node checks.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Visually inspect the medium‑speed CAN harness and connectors for damage, corrosion, loose pins, or signs of water ingress.
  2. With the ignition on, measure CAN‑H and CAN‑L voltages (should each be ~2.5 V, differential near 0 V); note if one rail is stuck near battery voltage.
  3. Systematically disconnect modules that use medium‑speed CAN (starting with BCM, instrument cluster, gateway) and re‑measure bus voltage after each disconnect to see if the high condition clears.
  4. Check continuity and resistance of the CAN‑bus pair (≈60 Ω termination) and test for shorts to power or ground using a multimeter or oscilloscope.
  5. If a specific module causes the bus‑high when reconnected, examine that module’s CAN transceiver or consider module replacement after confirming the fault.
  6. If no wiring or node fault is found, test the PCM/ECM CAN interface as a last resort; replacement of the PCM is seldom needed for U0017.
