U0072 — Vehicle Communication Bus E Shorted Bus E

Generic OBD-II · all makesNetwork / communication

U0072 indicates a short circuit has been detected on the vehicle's communication bus E (a CAN bus network). This means the data communication line is shorted to power, ground, or internally, preventing modules on that bus from communicating with each other.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Damaged wiring harness or connector

The CAN bus wiring for Bus E is chafed, pinched, melted, or corroded, causing a short to power, ground, or between CAN high/low wires.

2. Faulty control module on Bus E

A defective ECU, sensor, or control module connected to Bus E has failed and is shorting the bus network.

3. Water or contamination intrusion

Moisture, road salt, or debris has entered a connector, causing corrosion and a short circuit on the bus.

4. Short to battery power on the bus

A wiring fault is feeding battery voltage onto the CAN bus communication line, triggering the short detection.

5. Short to ground on the bus

A wiring fault is grounding the CAN bus communication line incorrectly.

6. PCM/ECM failure (rare)

In very rare cases, the network gateway or main processor within the PCM could be defective, but this is an uncommon cause compared to wiring or module faults.

How it's diagnosed

  1. 1. Scan for all U-codes and note which modules are not responding on the network.
  2. 2. Perform a visual inspection of the wiring harness for Bus E, looking for damage, chafing, melted insulation, or corroded connectors.
  3. 3. Check for signs of water intrusion or contamination at all module connections on Bus E.
  4. 4. Measure CAN bus termination resistance with a multimeter (typically 60 ohms for a healthy bus) and compare to specifications.
  5. 5. Use a oscilloscope or CAN bus diagnostic tool to check signal quality and look for shorts to power or ground.
  6. 6. Isolate modules on Bus E one at a time by disconnecting them to determine if removing a specific module clears the code.

Frequently asked

Should I replace the PCM/ECM for a U0072 code?

No. The PCM/ECM is rarely the cause of this code. In the vast majority of cases, the problem is wiring damage or a faulty individual module on that bus. Replacing the PCM is an unnecessary expense that rarely fixes U0072.

Can I still drive the vehicle with U0072?

Driving is not recommended. The shorted bus affects multiple vehicle systems including safety systems like ABS and airbags. The vehicle may experience reduced functionality, fail to start, or behave unpredictably.

What is 'Bus E' and why does my vehicle have multiple buses?

Modern vehicles use multiple CAN (Controller Area Network) buses to separate different systems. Bus E may carry communication for a specific group of modules (such as body controls, chassis, or powertrain). Having separate buses improves diagnostics and reduces traffic on any single network.

Will clearing the code make it go away?

No. Clearing the code without repairing the underlying short will cause it to return immediately. The short circuit is a hardware problem that must be physically repaired.
