OBD-II code U0110 indicates that the primary controller (typically the PCM/ECM or a hybrid system gateway module) has stopped receiving messages from the Drive Motor Control Module over the in-vehicle communication network. The Drive Motor Control Module is the inverter/controller that commands the high-voltage traction motor in hybrid and electric vehicles, so a loss of communication usually disables electric propulsion.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Damaged wiring or loose/corroded connector at the Drive Motor Control Module

The most common cause. The module's harness runs through harsh areas of the chassis where heat, vibration, and moisture degrade insulation and terminals, breaking the data and power circuits.

2. Loss of battery feed or ground to the Drive Motor Control Module

A blown fuse, failed relay, or corroded ground strap can remove operating power from the module, causing it to drop off the network even though the module itself is good.

3. General CAN bus / network fault

A shorted CAN pair, failed terminating resistor, or another module flooding the bus with bad messages can prevent any controller, including the drive motor module, from being heard.

4. Drive Motor Control Module internal failure

The inverter itself can fail due to overheating, internal transistor faults, or coolant pump failure. It is a real cause but less frequent than wiring and power supply problems.

5. Software/calibration mismatch after a repair or module replacement

If a module was recently swapped or reflashed, a missing or incorrect calibration can prevent normal network handshake and set U0110 even with good hardware.

6. PCM or gateway module failure (rare)

It is possible, but genuinely uncommon. Technicians should exhaust wiring, power, ground, and the Drive Motor Control Module itself before considering the PCM.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Verify the code with a scan tool and check for related U-codes, P-codes, and freeze-frame data to identify when the loss occurs (cold start, hot, while driving).
  2. Locate the Drive Motor Control Module and visually inspect its connector and harness for bent pins, pushed-back terminals, corrosion, water intrusion, chafing, and heat damage.
  3. With the ignition on, measure power feed and ground at the module connector using a multimeter; repair any missing voltage or high-resistance ground before going further.
  4. Check the supply fuses and any control relays in the drive motor module's power circuit; replace only after confirming an actual fault, not just because the code is present.
  5. Test the CAN bus at the module connector with a lab scope or high-impedance meter: verify proper resistance (typically ~60 ohms across the pair with ignition off) and clean signal波形.
  6. Attempt direct communication with the Drive Motor Control Module using a scan tool; if other modules are online but this one is not, the fault is between it and the network.

Is U0110 usually caused by a bad PCM?

No. Despite the code naming a 'control module' failure, in real-world diagnostics U0110 is almost always a wiring, connector, power-feed, ground, or CAN-bus problem. The PCM itself is rarely the cause and should only be considered after every other possibility has been ruled out by direct testing.

Can I keep driving with U0110?

It depends on the vehicle, but generally no. Electric drive assistance is typically disabled, which on a hybrid means poor performance and high fuel consumption, and on a battery-electric vehicle it can mean no propulsion at all. The vehicle should be diagnosed promptly, especially if the symptom is intermittent or worsening.

Does U0110 mean the high-voltage hybrid battery is bad?

Not directly. U0110 points to communication with the Drive Motor Control Module (the inverter), not the battery. The hybrid battery has its own codes and its own ECU. A weak 12V battery, however, can cause enough network instability to set U0110 and similar U-codes, so the 12V system should always be load-tested first.

Why are other U-codes often stored with U0110?

A single underlying network fault, such as a shorted CAN pair, a failed module dragging the bus down, or a low 12V supply, will usually cause multiple controllers to drop off simultaneously.
