U0149 indicates that a control module on the vehicle network has lost communication with a Gateway Module D. The gateway module acts as a router between different vehicle communication networks, and this code means the expected data exchange is not happening. 1. Gateway Module D internal failure

The gateway module itself has failed internally and is no longer transmitting or receiving network data. This is the most direct cause of a dedicated lost-communication code.

2. Wiring or connector fault on the communication bus

An open circuit, short to power/ground, or corroded/poor terminal contact on the serial data bus can prevent the gateway from communicating with other modules.

3. Power or ground supply loss to the gateway module

If the gateway module is missing battery voltage, ignition voltage, or ground due to a blown fuse, relay, or wiring fault, it will not power on and communication will be lost.

4. Another module on the same bus failing and disrupting communication

A shorted or failed module on the shared communication network can pull the bus down and cause a loss of communication with the gateway, even though the gateway itself is functional.

5. PCM/ECM internal communication circuit failure

Extremely unlikely as a cause. The reporting module would only be the source if its own transceiver circuit has failed, which is rare. Investigate all other causes first.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Verify the code with a capable scan tool and check for any other U-codes or related DTCs that may indicate which modules are affected.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of gateway module connectors, harness routing, and related fuse/relay locations for damage, corrosion, or loose terminals.
  3. Check power and ground supplies to the gateway module with a multimeter to confirm it is receiving proper voltage and has a good ground path.
  4. Use an oscilloscope or bus test tool to monitor serial data bus activity and verify whether the gateway is transmitting or if the bus is being pulled down.
  5. If multiple modules are affected, isolate the network by disconnecting modules one at a time to identify any module that is disrupting bus communication.
  6. Only after all wiring, power, ground, and network integrity checks pass should the gateway module itself or the PCM be suspected as an internal failure.
