U0176 is a network communication code indicating that the Restraints Control Module (also called the airbag/SRS control module, RCM, SDM, or ACM depending on the vehicle) has stopped receiving messages from Restraints System Sensor G. Sensor G is typically a satellite acceleration sensor used by the airbag system to decide when and which restraints to deploy. The code is set when that specific sensor drops off the in-vehicle communication bus for a set period of time.

1. Failed Restraints System Sensor G

The sensor itself is the most common cause. Internal electronics or the accelerometer can fail, causing it to stop transmitting on the bus.

2. Damaged wiring or connector at Sensor G

Chafed, broken, or pinched wires, along with loose, corroded, or backed-out connector pins at the sensor harness, are very common and should be inspected before replacing the part.

3. Loss of power or ground to the sensor

Sensor G requires dedicated power and ground. A blown fuse, broken feed, or poor ground will take the sensor offline even if the sensor is good.

4. Damaged communication bus wiring in that circuit

The sensor communicates over a dedicated or shared bus. Shorts, open circuits, or high resistance in the bus wires between the sensor and the Restraints Control Module will trigger the code.

5. Faulty Restraints Control Module

The module that polls Sensor G can fail internally or lose its ability to communicate on the bus. This is less common than sensor or wiring faults but is plausible if other U-codes are also present.

6. Module software or calibration issue

On some vehicles, an outdated or corrupted calibration in the Restraints Control Module can prevent it from recognizing the sensor. This is relatively rare and usually only confirmed after the hardware checks above.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Retrieve all stored DTCs from the Restraints Control Module and other modules; note any companion B-codes or U-codes that may point to the failed component.
  2. Consult vehicle-specific service information to identify the exact location and wiring of Restraints System Sensor G.
  3. Visually inspect the sensor connector and harness for damage, corrosion, bent pins, or loose fit; repair any wiring or connector issues found.
  4. With the key on, check for proper power supply and ground at the Sensor G connector using a multimeter.
  5. Use a scan tool or oscilloscope to verify whether the sensor is transmitting on the bus, or check for bus communication errors to isolate the sensor from the wiring.
  6. If power, ground, and bus integrity are confirmed good, substitute or replace the suspect sensor and clear codes to verify the fix.
