U0278 — Lost Communication Seat Control Module L

U0278 means a master module on the vehicle network (typically the PCM or a body/gateway module) has stopped receiving messages from the Seat Control Module designated 'L' (left or driver-side, depending on manufacturer). The code indicates a communication fault on the data bus, not an engine performance problem, and the seat module is being polled but is not responding.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Wiring or connector fault at the seat module

Harnesses under seats flex and chafe from constant seat travel, and the connectors can work loose, corrode, or get contaminated with debris. This is by far the most common cause of U0278.

2. Loss of power or ground to the seat module

If the module loses its ignition feed, battery feed, or ground reference, it cannot power up and respond on the network even if its internal circuitry is fine. The relevant fuse and ground point should be checked.

3. Failed seat control module itself

Internal electronic failure of the seat module is possible, especially after water intrusion, physical impact, or aftermarket seat modifications, but it is less common than wiring or supply faults.

4. CAN bus network issue

An open, short to power or ground, or high-resistance break in the CAN high/low lines between the gateway and the seat module, or a termination problem on that segment, can silence the module on the bus.

5. Another module dragging the network down

A shorted module on the same CAN segment can prevent the seat module from being seen. This is usually accompanied by multiple U-codes and modules that fail to respond to a scan tool.

6. PCM or gateway module internal failure

The engine computer is only reporting what it sees on the network. Internal failure of the PCM or gateway is sometimes suggested for U-codes but is almost never the actual cause of U0278.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan the entire vehicle for all DTCs, noting which modules respond and which do not, and record any companion U-codes that may point to a shared network fault.
  2. Visually inspect the harness and connectors under the affected seat, checking for chafed insulation, pinched wires near seat tracks, and loose, bent, or corroded pins.
  3. With the seat moved through its full range of travel, measure battery voltage, ignition feed, and ground at the seat module connector to expose intermittent opens.
  4. Check CAN bus resistance and observe high/low signal activity at the seat module connector using a multimeter or lab scope to rule out network wiring faults.
  5. Attempt direct communication with the seat module using a scan tool capable of addressing it; an inability to reach the module confirms a network- or module-side problem.
  6. If wiring, power, ground, and bus signal integrity all check out, the seat control module itself is the most likely remaining fault.
