U0461 — Invalid Data Received From Audible Alert Control Module

Generic OBD-II · all makesNetwork / communication

This network code indicates that a control module on the vehicle's communication bus is reporting that it received invalid or implausible data from the audible alert control module, which handles chimes and warning tones. It does not mean the reporting module is defective; it means the data coming from the audible alert module was missing, corrupted, or out of expected range.

Symptoms

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed or non-communicating audible alert control module

The audible alert module itself has internally failed or is not powering up, so it either sends no data or garbled data on the bus. This is the most common root cause when the module is completely silent on the network.

2. Wiring or connector fault to the audible alert module

An open circuit, corroded pin, loose connection, or damaged wire in the power, ground, or communication lines to the audible alert module prevents it from operating or communicating properly.

3. CAN bus / network communication fault

A short-to-power or short-to-ground on the communication bus, or a fault in bus termination, can corrupt messages and cause modules to flag invalid data from one another.

4. Software or calibration mismatch

If the audible alert module was recently replaced or reprogrammed with incorrect software, the data it sends may not match what the receiving module expects, triggering this code.

5. Faulty PCM or receiving control module

The module that detected the invalid data could itself be misinterpreting valid messages, but this is rare. It should only be considered after the audible alert module, wiring, and bus integrity have all been verified.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan all modules and record all stored codes; note whether other U-codes are present that may indicate a broader bus problem.
  2. Attempt to communicate with the audible alert control module using a scan tool; if it does not respond, focus on module power, ground, and bus wiring.
  3. Inspect the audible alert module connector and harness for corrosion, bent pins, chafing, or loose terminals; repair as needed.
  4. Check module power and ground at the audible alert module connector with a multimeter; verify battery voltage and good ground are present.
  5. Perform CAN bus continuity and resistance checks on the communication circuit between the audible alert module and the rest of the network; look for opens, shorts, or abnormal termination resistance.
  6. If wiring and bus checks pass and the module has proper power and ground but still does not communicate or sends invalid data, the audible alert module itself is the likely failure.

Frequently asked

Does U0461 mean my engine computer (PCM) is bad?

No. The PCM or another module is simply reporting that it received bad data from the audible alert module. The reporting module is almost never the problem. Replacing the PCM for this code is almost always incorrect unless it has been conclusively proven faulty after all other causes are ruled out.

Can I still drive the vehicle with this code?

In most cases yes, as the code typically affects audible warning chimes rather than engine or safety-critical operation. However, loss of warning chimes for seatbelt, keys-in-ignition, or lights-on reminders can be an inconvenience and should be addressed.

Is this a common code?

It is relatively uncommon and is typically seen on vehicles with a dedicated audible alert or chime control module. On vehicles where chime functions are integrated into the instrument cluster or body control module, this specific code would not normally appear.

Could a low battery or voltage issue cause this code?

Yes. If system voltage drops low enough, modules may fail to power up or communicate correctly, generating network codes like this one. Checking battery health and charging voltage is worthwhile before condemning the audible alert module.
