U0637 is a network communication code indicating that a control module on the vehicle (typically the hybrid powertrain control module or PCM) is not receiving a response from the Battery Pack Coolant Control Valve B over the in-vehicle communication bus. The B-suffixed valve is one of several used to route coolant through the hybrid/EV battery pack thermal management circuit, and a loss of communication usually means that specific valve module is unreachable rather than that the entire cooling system has failed.
The valve assembly contains a small electronic controller, motor, and position sensor. These internal components commonly fail and are the single most frequent cause of a U0637, because loss of communication means the module is no longer responding on the bus.
The valve sits in a coolant-rich environment, and its connector is exposed to heat, vibration, and moisture. Oxidized pins, a partially seated connector, or bent terminals are a very common source of intermittent or hard communication loss.
Wires for power, ground, and the communication bus can be nicked, stretched, or chafed against the battery enclosure or other components, producing an open or short that drops the module off the network.
A blown fuse, failed relay, or broken ground strap can prevent the valve's internal electronics from powering up, which the rest of the network will report as lost communication.
High resistance, a short to power or ground on the communication lines, or a problem with a shared terminating resistor can knock multiple modules off the bus and produce a U-code family including U0637.
A fault inside the control module that polls this valve is possible, but it is rare and should only be considered after every wiring, connector, power/ground, and valve-side cause has been ruled out.
Short-term driving is usually possible, but the hybrid battery may not be properly cooled, which can lead to elevated battery temperatures under load. Limit heavy acceleration and extended high-speed driving, and have the system checked soon.
Because it is a communication code, the controlling module is often blamed, but in real-world failures the valve itself or its wiring and connector is the cause in the large majority of cases. Replacing the computer without first proving the bus, power, ground, and valve are good is usually an unnecessary expense and frequently does not fix the problem.
Hybrid battery thermal management often uses multiple coolant control valves arranged in series or parallel to direct flow through different sections of the pack. The B designation simply identifies the second valve in that group; A and any additional valves are addressed by their own codes.
It can clear if the underlying cause is intermittent, such as a loose connector or a temporarily wet terminal, but it typically returns once the conditions recur. A recurring U0637 should be diagnosed rather than just cleared and ignored.
