U0657 is a network communication code indicating the engine control module (PCM/ECM) is not receiving a signal from the turbocharger/supercharger bypass valve position sensor. The bypass valve (also referred to as a wastegate or boost bypass actuator) uses a position sensor to report its current opening, and this code is set when that data goes missing or becomes implausible on the communication bus.

What causes it — most likely first

1. Failed bypass valve position sensor

The sensor element itself, whether a separate potentiometer/Hall unit or integrated into the actuator, is the single most common cause. Internal failure produces no usable signal and triggers the U-code.

2. Damaged, corroded, or loose connector/wiring

Heat, vibration, and oil exposure near the turbo area degrade harness insulation and connector pins. Open or shorted sensor wiring frequently mimics a failed sensor.

3. Failed bypass valve actuator assembly

On many engines the position sensor is built into the actuator. A mechanically stuck or electrically failed actuator can prevent the sensor from reporting a valid position.

4. CAN bus / signal circuit issue

Intermittent or high resistance on the sensor's signal or power supply circuit can interrupt communication. Less common than component failure but worth checking if the sensor tests good.

5. Shared power or ground fault

If the sensor shares a 5V reference or ground with other components, a fault in that shared circuit can knock the sensor offline and may set additional codes.

6. PCM/ECM internal failure

Genuine control-module failure is rare for this specific code. It should only be considered after the sensor, wiring, actuator, and power/ground have all been verified.

How it's diagnosed

  1. Scan for all related DTCs and review freeze-frame data to see when the signal was lost (cold start, hot, under boost, etc.).
  2. Visually inspect the bypass valve actuator and position sensor connector for oil contamination, corrosion, bent pins, and a fully seated connector.
  3. Back-probe the sensor connector and verify proper reference voltage, ground, and signal voltage with the key on, comparing to manufacturer specifications.
  4. Monitor the bypass valve position sensor PID in real time with a scan tool while manually actuating the valve (or driving) to confirm whether the signal is missing, stuck, or erratic.
  5. Wiggle-test the harness near the turbo and along the engine to surface intermittent opens or shorts while monitoring the PID or voltage.
  6. If wiring and power are good and the sensor does not respond, replace or service the bypass valve actuator/sensor assembly before considering module-level diagnosis.
