1983 Buick Century

Factory specifications, fluid capacities, torque values, EPA fuel economy and the federal safety record for the 1983 Century.

The 1983 Buick Century is characterized by an engine oil capacity of 3 qt with approved viscosities spanning 20W-20, 10W-30, and 10W-40. Reliability data assigns this model year 8 total owner complaints primarily attributed to the Electrical System, along with 1 recall. Although broader model complaint history documents years from 1990 to 2005 with highs of 252 and lows of 19, the 1983 unit sits outside that range, indicating a separate reliability profile from the subsequent years.

Reliability & federal safety record

Owner-reported issues, recalls, investigations and service bulletins on record with NHTSA — an unfiltered look at what owners actually experience.

The 1983 Buick Century sits outside the federal complaint and recall data provided, which begins in 1990 for a later generation of the model. Without recorded complaints, recalls, or investigations for 1983—or the immediate years before or after—it’s impossible to assess trends or reliability arcs within its own generation. The isolated complaint areas for 1983 (electrical system, brakes, steering, and visibility) each register only a single report, with no fire or crash-related incidents, suggesting no systemic issues at the time. However, the absence of data means this year cannot be benchmarked against later patterns of escalating complaints and recalls seen in the 1990s. Given the lack of red flags in the limited 1983 data but no broader context, the year appears neutral—neither demonstrably problematic nor proven reliable. The concrete takeaway: proceed with caution, prioritizing a thorough pre-purchase inspection, as the data offers no reassurance of long-term durability.

THE BRAKE PROPORTIONER VALVES MAY BREAK AND SEPARATE FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER. THIS WOULD ALLOW BRAKE FLUID TO LEAK AND WOULD RESULT IN A PARTIAL LOSS OF THE BRAKE SYSTEM. Remedy: THE DEALER WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE ALL SUSPECT VALVES.
